About Trulicity
Medication class:
GLP-1 receptor agonist
Trulicity (Dulaglutide) is a GLP-1 receptor agonist used for the management of type 2 diabetes. It helps improve blood sugar control when used alongside diet and exercise.
Trulicity carries important warnings, including the risk of thyroid C-cell tumors and pancreatitis. Patients should be monitored for signs of these conditions.
Patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 should avoid Trulicity. Regular monitoring of kidney function is also recommended.
Common side effects of Trulicity include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. These effects are usually mild to moderate and may decrease over time.
Severe side effects can include pancreatitis, severe allergic reactions, and thyroid tumors. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe abdominal pain or signs of an allergic reaction.
Trulicity is administered as a subcutaneous injection once weekly. It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food, making it convenient for patients.
Trulicity may interact with other medications such as insulin and sulfonylureas, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia. Alcohol can also exacerbate gastrointestinal side effects.
Alternatives to Trulicity include Liraglutide, Semaglutide, and Exenatide, which are also GLP-1 receptor agonists used for diabetes management.
Trulicity is not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly needed. Discuss with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Store Trulicity in the refrigerator and protect it from light. It can be kept at room temperature for up to 28 days after first use.
In case of overdose, seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms may include severe nausea and vomiting, which require immediate care.
When traveling, keep Trulicity refrigerated if possible. If not, it can be stored at room temperature for up to 28 days, but should be kept cool during transport.
